Look at these amazing pictures that document the changes that occur to the umbilical cord in the first 15 minutes after the birth of a baby. In Hypnobirthing we advocate for ‘delayed’ cord clamping, so that baby receives the full allocation of blood that nature has provided for her/him. This also gives baby time to transition to air breathing.
We don’t prematurely clamp the cord and cut off oxygen supply to any other mammal. I’ve often questioned…why is it so often done to human babies?
Leaving the cord attached to baby straight after birth, and allowing it to finish pulsating, is one of the simplest ways that you can give your baby a little head start in life.
Please ensure that it is in your Birthing Preferences and discuss your wishes with your caregiver during pregnancy.
