PREGNANCY & BIRTH RECOMMENDATIONS

Our Birth Tool Must-Haves!

When you know better, you can do better! Knowledge is truly power and this is why we provide birthing parents with loads of resources to further help educate parents about everything childbirth! Check out our recommendations below for everything you might need to further prepare for birth and postpartum.

TENS MACHINE

Tens Machine is a drug-free pain relief option for during labour. The TENS machine sends small, safe pulses of electrical current via the leads to the pads on your skin. They are thought to affect the way pain signals are sent to the brain. The Birth Store is a great place to hire your TENS machine; they offer an 8-week hire period, allowing plenty of time before and after you give birth.

SLEEPYBELLY

Unlike traditional U-shaped pregnancy pillows that can take over the entire bed, the Sleepybelly Pregnancy Pillow features an innovative 3-piece adjustable design that supports your body exactly where you need it most. The Sleepybelly’s adjustable support wedges are designed to help keep your body comfortably positioned throughout the night, providing support for both your bump and back.

BIRTHING BALL

Birthing balls are essentially the same as exercise balls. They are made of durable materials that make them extremely difficult to puncture. Birthing balls tend to be larger (for comfort) and have an anti-slip finish. Birth balls are definitely a favourite tool for many mums as they can reduce pain and help you feel more comfortable during labour and can be used before, during and after birth.

THE THOMPSON METHOD

Developed by Dr Robyn Thompson, The Thompson Method Breastfeeding Course focuses on helping women understand normal breastfeeding physiology and avoid many common complications through education and preparation. The Thompson Method was developed following decades of clinical practice and research into breastfeeding challenges and nipple trauma.

BIRTH COMB

The labour and birth comb, also known as an acupressure comb is a great tool to have in your birth kit as it helps stimulate certain pressure points on the body during labor. The theory behind using the birth comb during labor is that applying pressure to specific points on the body can help manage discomforts, induce relaxation, and potentially facilitate the progress of labor.

AROMATHERAPY

Essential oils are powerful mixtures of aromatic plants and scents that can trigger reactions in your body and brain that can help you keep calmer and more comfortable during labour. Essential oils and the conditioning that can be created through their use, are said to be helpful in relieving anxiety, nausea, and pain during labour and birth.

ACUPRESSURE LABOUR BALLS

Massage balls are a great pain relief tool for pregnancy and labour. During labour, you can rub the spiky ball between your hands or feet during surges to relieve the pain. The tactile stimulation will focus your receptors away from the area of your brain responsible for the perception of pain.

OPTIMAL MATERNAL POSITIONING

Optimal Maternal positioning (OMP) is a system of exercises, movements, positions, stretches, and other techniques that help create alignment and mobility within a mother’s pelvis, to ultimately facilitate cardinal movements of the baby. It creates space within your pelvis for a safer, easier, and more convenient birth. OMP Online program is a really convenient way to learn at your own pace as you master the techniques and positions to give you the confidence for a safe and empowered birth experience. It also connects you into the OMP online Community.

HYPNOBIRTHING MUSIC

Music moves us emotionally and also physically. It is an important tool in our toolkit, as we prepare for a beautiful, calm, and very positive birth. We have a variety of background music to help you during labour and birth available for purchase on our website. We also have created a Spotify playlist for your benefit! We have hypnobirthing playlists you can utilise throughout your birth, both music with and without vocals. If you want to have a laugh, we have also created a playlist “How to Give Birth” which you can view here.

MATERNITY UNDERWEAR

Designed by a midwife, these disposable maternity underwear are perfect for your postpartum period or when your waters break. They replace bulky pads and are designed to be worn comfortably, even after a C-section. Secure, comfortable, absorbent and leak-free, they can be worn during the day or overnight, making them the perfect choice for your postpartum recovery.

SLEEPPHONES

These SleepPhones are a great tool to add to your birth kit for listening to your hypnobirthing MP3s and music! With thin, adjustable, and high-quality audio speakers nestled inside a comfortable, wearable, and washable headband, AcousticSheep products make listening to audio easy.

ICE AND HEAT PACKS

Ice and heat packs can be very comforting and can be used anytime during and after birth. Ice and heat packs are great to help manage discomforts you may experience during labour and birth and they can also be super helpful with perineum soreness after birth. Ensure you double check the temperature before applying to sensitive areas.

RASPBERRY TEA LEAF

Raspberry leaf tea is a popular herbal remedy often recommended for pregnant women, particularly in the third trimester. There is some evidence that suggests that raspberry leaf tea may help prepare the uterus for labor and potentially assist in the labor process.

PERINEAL MASSAGE OIL

Perineal massage is the massage of a pregnant woman’s perineum (the skin and muscle between the vaginal opening and the anus). The act of massaging the perineal tissue helps prepare these tissues to stretch over your baby’s head and body during birth to reduce the likelihood of tearing or an episiotomy during birth.
