Three ways to mentally prepare for an easier birth experience

Our bodies know how to birth just as our bodies know what to do throughout pregnancy it is just our minds that need some help.

When a mother and her birth partner are able to approach their birth without fear and with knowledge, good support, and tools for the birth – then their birthing can be a positive and empowering experience.

Here are three ways you can mentally prepare for an easier birth experience:
Affirmations

Words have power, especially in pregnancy, labour, and birth. Words can directly affect how we think, feel, behave, the action we take, and how we relate with others.

The more we repeat a thought the more likely that thought will be imprinted in our subconscious mind and become a part of our belief system. This goes for negative thoughts as well.

This is where our positive birth affirmations come into play, they are one of the most valuable tools we teach in our Positive Birth Program and Online Hypnobirthing Course to maintain a positive mindset throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth.

We have an MP3 track available for purchase through our online store called “Affirmations for beautiful birthing” which is available with our track “Surge of the Sea” to help maintain a positive mindset for your pregnancy and birth. You can click here to purchase.

Visualisation

Let’s face it, the word ‘visualisation’ can sound a bit ‘woo-woo’. According to research using brain imagery, visualisation works because neurons in our brains (those electrically excitable cells that transmit information) interpret imagery as equivalent to a real-life action. So this means that when we visualise doing or achieving something, the brain actually tells our brain neurons to “perform” the movement. This creates a new neural pathway and primes our body to act in a way consistent with what we imagined. All of this occurs without actually performing the physical activity, yet it achieves a similar result. So if we ‘see’ it, we can ‘believe’ it and ultimately ‘achieve’ it. Cool huh?

Visualise what you want… and let your brain help you to achieve your goals! It ain’t ‘woo-hoo’ – it’s science!

Self-hypnosis

The hypnotherapy that we use in our Positive Birth Program helps to release fears and condition ourselves to release endorphins at times during our birth.  Our subconscious mind is where our feelings, memories, experiences, imagination, habits, attitudes, reactions, perceptions, beliefs, and values are all stored. Hypnosis is a shortcut to our subconscious mind so we’re able to reprogram our subconscious to think more positively about birth. With the help of hypnotherapy, the birth of your baby can be a more calm and relaxed experience; one where you are in the driver’s seat, rather than feeling like a passenger. This is likely to reduce the need for interventions during your birthing.
