Bio
I am a Registered Nurse/ Midwife and Child Health Nurse. I have been working in the industry for 16 years. I was lucky enough to witness some incredible women during their births in Vanuatu on a nursing student placement almost 19 years ago. I still remember the first birth I saw, it was just magical. I remember being so intrigued how incredibly strong, resilient and in control the women were with their bodies and minds through labour. I cried happy tears. I turned to my facilitator and said “I want to be a Midwife.”
I then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery and went back to Vanuatu to facilitate nursing and midwifery students from Australia. I was able to pass on the wisdom and knowledge that I was taught from my lecturer, the women and the local Midwives all those years ago.
After some years of travelling to Vanuatu yearly I decided to make a move to rural Western Australia to continue working as a Midwife in Port Hedland, WA.
For the past 10 years I have travelled and worked around the Northern Territory in a variety of midwifery settings. It has included a mixture of hospitals, Aboriginal Medical Services and Government clinics in case load Midwifery, birthing, antenatal, postnatal, Special Care Nursery and on call midwifery emergencies services. All have been incredibly challenging but more rewarding experiences.
The most special place I have worked/ lived has been Maningrida. A remote Aboriginal community to Top End NT. I worked as a Midwife for 2 years supporting women through their pregnancy and postnatal period.
To complete the holistic care for women and their families I moved to Melbourne to study Graduate Diploma in Child and Family Health Nursing. This has allowed me to further support families beyond the initial postnatal period.
After a break I came back to Maningrida working in the child Health clinic where I was attending to the developmental health checks on the 4-year-olds I had cared for in utero. It has been such a special journey building such beautiful relationships with the families and watching their children grow.
